In November of 2016 NAHS was approved to proceed with Phase 1 of a new addition to the Buttertubs Place complex. The new addition will add a 6-story apartment complex with 80 units to complement the existing 82 patio homes. The 80 units will be a mix of Studio 1BR, 1 BR + den, and 2BR units. The complex will be a mixed income building including some units near current Nanaimo rental housing market rates and the rest being below-market. Some units will be available at current rates for seniors with a limited income. The building will also house a commercial kitchen and dining hall.
BC Housing is funding a portion of the capital cost of construction through the BC Province’s Investment in Housing Innovation Program announced in 2016. This capital investment will assist NAHS to maintain a below market rent structure for the life of the project. The City of Nanaimo is also assisting by reducing Development Cost charges for the project.
Construction of the new complex is scheduled to break ground in the fall of 2017 with opening estimated for Spring 2019.
NAHS expects to apply to BC Housing to participate in Phase 2 of the project which will add an additional 60 units of affordable senior’s housing.
